WHAT WE LOVE: Dress watches have a very fine line to walk, if you withhold too much in the interests of keeping the dial minimalistic then you might make the watch appear austere and without soul. If you add too much to the watch then you defeat the purpose of a dress watch being clean and elegant. A. Lange & Sohne have done a masterful job toeing this line with the 1815 Up Down, which while it is undisputedly a dress watch has plenty of interest in the dial. Modernised Arabic numeral hour markers are flanked by a railroad minute track, with the dial stepping down around the sub-seconds and power reserve indicator. The blued steel hands provide a large degree of contrast against the silver dial and the watch is eminently readable even in low light conditions. As beautiful and interesting as the dial is, the movement is where this watch really shines. With a design based on a vintage pocket watch movement, you see a movement that fits the case perfectly under a sapphire glass that brings you incredibly close to the movement. Lange and Sohne produce vanishingly few watches every year, estimates suggest about 5000 watches are made annually and demand for the brand has never been higher with years-long waiting lists present for many models at present.
